The flames were visible from afar. In the middle of the bastide, rue Pomairols, a car caught fire this Tuesday morning, around 11 a.m. The driver was able to get out of the vehicle to safety and there were no casualties in the incident.
The fire spread to a campervan which was located nearby. Firefighters from the Villefranche-de-Rouergue emergency center intervened immediately to bring these two fires under control. The street was cordoned off and gendarmes from the Villefranche-de-Rouergue brigade and the municipal police secured the scene.
Fire under control
The burning vehicle stopped between the facades of the old buildings of the bastide. Luckily, no wooden doors were in contact with the flames, which could have led to a larger fire in buildings. Certain facades, around the two vehicles, were still partially charred.
Firefighters ensured that the scene was well secured, in particular by checking gas cylinders located near the fire. The two vehicles destroyed by the flames must be evacuated during the day, before reopening the street.
