Chicago woman accused of murder: dances while asking Google to play music

A Chicago woman accused of stabbing her partner to death allegedly asked her Google device to play songs for her while she danced in handcuffs during her arrest, nearly a year after his death.

Whitney Wilcox, 40, was rearrested Dec. 2 for the murder of her boyfriend, Jeremy Rodgers, 46, in February, as reported by The Chicago Sun-Times.

Wilcox was initially arrested shortly after Rodgers' death, but was released without charges. However, new DNA evidence has emerged, allowing Cook County prosecutors to now charge him with first-degree murder, according to the local media outlet.

As the accused waited for police to come and question her last week, she allegedly “commanded her Google device to play several songs and danced while handcuffed in the living room,” according to court documents obtained by the outlet.

Wilcox and Rodgers had been arguing on the morning of Feb. 26 at their West Ridge apartment, when Wilcox called 911 and reported that Rodgers had been stabbed, but claimed not to know who the assailant was, according to the Cook County prosecutors.

Wilcox and Rodgers had been in an argument on the morning of February 26 in their apartment, and during this exchange, Wilcox had called emergency services.

When law enforcement arrived, they found Rodgers lying on the bathroom floor, his body bleeding, while Wilcox was “upset but otherwise clean and bloodless.”

She allegedly told officers she stabbed Rodgers in self-defense during their altercation.

However, before he died, Rodgers allegedly charged Wilcox while he was being treated by first responders, according to prosecutors.

Rodgers was rushed to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston for treatment, where he also reportedly assured medical staff that Wilcox had stabbed him.

He died from his injuries the next day, and his death was ruled a homicide.

At the time, prosecutors said she stabbed Rodgers in self-defense, leading to her release.

Investigators found a large, bloody knife next to the kitchen sink in the couple's apartment.

The knife was later tested, revealing that the handle had Wilcox's DNA and the blade had Rodgers' blood, leading to the new charges.

Wilcox is being held without bail awaiting trial.

His next court appearance is scheduled for December 24.

This tragic case raises essential questions about domestic violence and the complexity of relationship dynamics. As the debate over self-defense continues to evolve, it is imperative that the justice system carefully evaluates the evidence and context behind each incident. Legislation and awareness around domestic violence must advance to ensure victims receive the protection and support they need while ensuring a fair trial for the accused. The balance between justice and compassion remains a challenge that society must address, in order to avoid similar tragedies in the future.
