The first mass in Notre-Dame Cathedral since the destructive fire of 2019 begins at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, December 8. Chaired by the archbishop of Paris Laurent Ulrich, the celebration is held in the presence of Emmanuel Macron, but also foreign heads of state and government and certain major donors. Many religious leaders present. Alongside heads of state and government from around the world, 170 bishops as well as priests from 106 Parisian parishes and one priest from each of the seven Eastern Rite Catholic Churches will be in the cathedral in the morning to attend the inaugural mass, reports the diocese of Paris.
The public returning to the Gothic cathedral. The first mass open to the public will be held at the end of the day, from 6:30 p.m. All the places have been taken by storm and some 2,500 people are expected for this popular event broadcast by France Télévisions. Other masses will follow every evening throughout the so-called “octave” week.
A maximum security event. An exceptional security system is planned for Saturday and Sunday in a context of “very high level of terrorist threat”according to the police headquarters, with 6,000 police officers and gendarmes mobilized.
A special edition lasting 48 hours. France Télévisions is offering special editions on France 2 and franceinfo as well as full broadcasts of these two days of celebration. The exceptional program begins at 6:30 a.m. and continues with broadcasts and news at 1 p.m. and 8 p.m.
