A “luminous object” observed on Saturday in the sky of Tehran and its surroundings is linked to a “(military) test in real conditions”, reported a local media after the amazement of certain residents. Images shared on social media show an object rising into the sky followed by a long, straight line of light at daybreak. The phenomenon was observed from Tehran but also the city of Karaj, on its western outskirts.
It was a “(military) test in real conditions,” said the local Tasnim news agency, specifying that it was carried out by the Revolutionary Guard Corps, the ideological army of the Iran. Some Internet users described the object as a “missile” but the Tasnim agency did not provide details on the exact nature of this “luminous object”.
This phenomenon comes at a time when Iran, Syria’s unwavering supporter, has promised to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad “with all its strength” against a lightning offensive by rebels which threatens his power. The Revolutionary Guards, whose forces, prerogatives and weapons are distinct from the conventional army, did not immediately comment.
Their aerospace force plays an important role in Iran’s missile program, which is criticized by Western countries. In October, this unit was notably at the origin of missile attacks against Israeli territory, in a context of heightened tensions with Israel, sworn enemy of Iranian power since the advent of the Islamic Republic in 1979.
