German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he “good hope” to reach a common strategy with President-elect Donald Trump for a peace plan in Ukraine, in an interview published on Saturday. “I have already spoken at length on the telephone with the future American president (…) I am hopeful that we will be able to develop a common strategy for Ukraine” in order to put an end to the conflict, declared the German leader in an interview with the newspapers of the German press group Funke.

Olaf Scholz’s statements come just before the arrival in of a number of leaders for the reopening ceremony of Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral on Saturday, which will be the occasion for intense diplomatic exchanges, with a possible first meeting between Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky. The two men had already met in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September, but this would be their first meeting since the election of Donald Trump.

In his interview Scholz clarified: “My supreme principle remains the same: nothing should be decided over the heads of Ukrainians. I made this very clear again to President Zelensky during my visit to kyiv earlier this week.”
