The queen on vacation, playing the guitar or writing letters… To commemorate the ten years of her death, the royal palace released personal photos of Queen Fabiola from its archives, taken by her husband King Baudouin.

Because ten years have passed since her disappearance, the Belgian royal palace wanted to pay tribute to Queen Fabiola. Several souvenir photos were shared on social networks this December 5. Unpublished and personal photos, since they were taken by her husband King Baudoin.

In the series of photos, from the royal archives, Queen Fabiola appears sometimes on vacation, sometimes on the guitar or writing her correspondence. Images taken in private, which show a sovereign all smiles in front of her husband’s lens.

The Spanish aristocrat Fabiola de Mora y Aragón was 32 years old when she married Baudouin, King of the Belgians, in 1960. A queen appreciated for her gentleness and benevolence, Fabiola was particularly involved in social assistance, helping to childhood, mental health and even the arts. She was 65 years old when her beloved husband died suddenly of a heart attack in the summer of 1993, while they were on vacation at their villa in Motril, Spain.

Facing multiple miscarriages, King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola were unable to start a family. When the sovereign died, it was his brother Albert who ascended the throne, with his son Prince Philippe as successor. Five years after the death of her husband, Fabiola left their castle in Laeken to settle in Stuyvenberg Castle.

The Queen continued to represent the royal family abroad until her death on December 5, 2014, at age 86, just over a year after attending the swearing-in of her nephew, the new king. Philip. She was buried in the royal crypt of the Notre-Dame church in Laeken, alongside her husband.
