New incidents punctuated French lawns this Friday. During the match between Villefranche-Beaujolais and Dijon, counting for the 14th day of National 1, scuffles broke out between supporters of the two clubs, while the score was 1-0 for the locals in the 86th minute. Projectiles and smoke bombs were notably launched, as evidenced by the images from France Bleu Bourgogne.
Despite several calls for calm, referee Steven Llewellyn sent the players back to the locker room, waiting for the situation to improve. After a half-hour interruption, the meeting finally resumed and came to an end.
A “feeling of shame”
France Bleu reports that Dijon defender Nassim Titebah was the target of racist insults according to players' testimonies. For his part, the president of the DFCO Pierre-Henri Deballon regretted “the defeat of football” after an “unacceptable” evening. “Feeling of shame,” the leader wrote on X.
“I won't make any immediate comments, that's not what we want to see on the football field,” Baptiste Ridira, the Dijon coach, simply declared after the match.
