Four Taiwanese soldiers were indicted on Friday for transmitting confidential information to Chinese agents between 2022 and 2024, according to a judicial source.

Three of the soldiers involved were members of the military unit responsible for security at the head of state’s office, said Wen Lii, presidential spokesperson. The fourth serves within the Information and Telecommunications Command of the Ministry of Defense.

According to information provided by the prosecution, the four soldiers used their mobile phones to photograph sensitive military documents or information. This data would then have been transmitted to “Chinese agents”, reports AFP.

No additional information regarding the nature of the documents transmitted or the extent of the leak has been disclosed. Taiwanese authorities have not yet publicly commented on this affair, which comes against a backdrop of accumulated tensions between Taipei and Beijing.

This affair is part of a climate of persistent crisis between Taiwan and China, which considers the island as an integral part of its territory. Beijing has been intensifying its diplomatic and military pressure for several years to isolate Taiwan on the international scene. For its part, Taipei, supported by Western partners such as the United States, is strengthening its defense capabilities in the face of the growing threat of Chinese intervention.
