As part of a national movement, a mobilization of the civil service is planned for Thursday, December 5. Demonstrations will take place in Strasbourg and Mulhouse
at the call of all representative unions. Main object of discontent: the project, defended by the government, of increasing the waiting period from one to three days for civil servants.
The mobilization should particularly be significant in National Education: more than 50% of strikers in primary education in the two Alsatian departments, according to panels produced by the FSU-Snuipp which is counting on several school closures. School canteens will also be disrupted.
Drop in grants to communities: Schiltigheim has taken the lead
Canteens, gymnasiums, administrative procedures, music lessons: the municipal services of the City of Schiltigheim, with the exception of the municipal police, were already closed on Wednesday, December 4. The goal? “Denounce the growing budgetary pressure exerted on local authorities,” explains the City. The community estimates its shortfall of €650,000 in 2025, if the savings planned by the government are implemented.
-“However, the new Victor Hugo school group costs €300,000 per year to operate,” reacts mayor Danielle Dambach. Eventually, we risk having to close a gymnasium or a swimming pool because we no longer have the means to heat them.”
The aim of the operation is also to make the population aware of the importance of municipal services… and local elected officials. They are the “population’s last link with politics”, argues Christian Ball, opposition councilor. They were on duty all day to raise awareness among the population about this issue.
