On Wednesday, July 10, the SDIS 32 presented its new prevention campaign against the risks of forest fires. A campaign comprising several posters and a video clip to warn of three major risks: barbecues, sparks and cigarettes.

“With the impact of a forest fire, we will have irreversible damage in the space of a few minutes.” To accompany the arrival of the first summer heat, the Gers departmental fire and rescue service (SDIS 32) is launching a prevention campaign against the risks of forest fires. A campaign that was made possible thanks to the Green Fund that the center of Gers benefited from in order to prevent the risks of fires.

Thus, the Gers branch was able to equip itself with equipment (drone), train specialists, but also set up a large-scale awareness campaign. The latter consists of three posters highlighting three identified fire risks: barbecues, sparks and cigarettes.

Posters plastered all over the department

These posters will be posted throughout the department. They will be accompanied by a video clip for the digital campaign. A prevention clip produced with the Lisbon agency Studio à Table, which gives the floor to a member of the National Forestry Office (ONF) and a captain of the SDIS.

The press conference was held on Wednesday morning in the Armagnac room of the SDIS 32 in Auch.

Both identify the risks and highlight the good practices to adopt in order to prevent a fire from starting, before ending with a strong message expressed by dozens of firefighters: “Help us preserve our forests!” The aim of this campaign is to raise awareness among all Gersois residents about the risks in the department but also during their holidays beyond the borders.

Strengthened means of combat

During the press conference held at the premises of the SDIS 32, the Secretary General of the Southern Defense and Security Zone, Olivier Marmion, confirmed the future reinforcement of ten vehicles to fight forest fires more effectively. In addition, the number of firefighters trained in this exercise in the Gers has practically doubled in a few years, reaching one hundred competent firefighters. To complement these means of fighting, a 30-day awareness campaign led by ONF agents will be added to the summer agenda to remind people that a simple imprudence can lead to a tragedy.

While the number of forest fires in the Gers is limited, those in natural areas such as crop fires or stubble fires are more frequent, as was the case this Tuesday in Riguepeu (1 ha of burnt surface). During the press conference, it was recalled that the SDIS 32 represents a “key player in the fight against forest fires in the South zone” with particular reference to the assistance provided by the Gers delegation to departments in difficulty during episodes of megafires in 2022.

They were present at the conference

This Wednesday, July 10, many personalities were present at the press conference: Colonel hors classe of SDIS 32 Jean-Louis Ferres, the president of SDIS 32 Bernard Gendre, the secretary general of the defense and security zone of the southern zone Olivier Marmion, the chief of staff of the prefect of Gers Julie David, and the president of the Departmental Council of Gers Philippe Dupouy.
