The name game continues: a duo gains momentum for the Colón bench

The name game continues at Club Atlético Colón as they look to replace Diego Osella! Recently, the name of Alejandro Orfila surfaced but was quickly dismissed, leaving room for two candidates identified by Iván Moreno and Fabianesi.

After the failure of the options of Alfredo Grelak, now confirmed at Ferro, and Álvaro Recoba, the club management continued its discussions. A new solid option has emerged: the duo of Ariel “Pata” Pereyra and Diego Castagno Suárez.

On Tuesday, club executives along with Moreno and Fabianesi organized a three-hour Zoom meeting with the two candidates. The conversation mainly revolved around football, their analyzes of the current squad, young players, the league itself and the urgent need for Colón to obtain immediate promotion.

The discussions left a positive impression on Víctor Godano and his management team. As of today, Pereyra and Castagno Suárez are now the leading candidates for the daunting task of returning Colón to the first division.

The intention now is to accelerate the process in order to reach an agreement as quickly as possible, as management aims to present its sporting project before the end of the year. Updates are expected in the coming hours.

As for their backgrounds, none of the candidates have held the position of head coach before; both worked as assistants. Pereyra was Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s assistant at Lanús, Palermo, Boca Juniors, LA Galaxy and the Paraguay national team, while Castagno Suárez assisted Gabriel Milito at Argentinos Juniors.

Without a doubt, those who know the history of the club will remember Castagno Suárez as the number 5 of the team that achieved second place and the historic qualification for the Copa Libertadores of 1997. He remained with Rojinegro until ‘in 2002, when he was sold to Independiente.

Meanwhile, Pereyra joined Colón in June 2022 and remained there until 2004, when he moved to San Lorenzo, having previously shared central defense with Pablo Morant.
