Named “Hydre”, this new radar was developed by Bruitparif. This is an organization that is responsible for combating noise-related nuisances. The device has already undergone an experimental phase in several cities in France.
Seven cities in France, Paris, Rueil-Malmaison, Villeneuve-le-Roi, Toulouse, Bron, Nice and Saint-Lambert, have already dealt with it during an experimental phase in 2022.
From 2025, the new “Hydre” radar should appear nationally. The latter’s mission is to evaluate the noise level of cars and motorcycles to determine whether it is too high or not. The latter was built by Bruitparif, an organization which is responsible for combating noise-related nuisances.
According to Le Figaro, in 2022, between 10 and 44 vehicles have been reported per day.
Eight microphones and two cameras
But how does this device work? In detail, the Hydra is equipped with eight microphones and two cameras which will identify and read vehicle plates over a radius of 15 meters. If the car – or motorcycle – emits more than 85 decibels, it is then flashed and the driver fined.
Concerning the fine, please refer to article R318-3 of the Highway Code which indicates that this offense is class 4 with a fixed fine of 135 euros, reduced to 90 euros.
