Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba recently announced that preparations for the deployment of the US-based Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine are underway. The statement follows US President Joe Biden’s announcement of a $1.85 billion military aid package for Ukraine, which includes a Patriot missile defense system. The announcement was made during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on December 21.

Additional military aid expected

Further bolstering Ukraine’s military support, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal revealed that kyiv was planning an additional $2.2 billion in military aid from Washington. He also expressed hope that the US Congress would approve another package worth almost $45 billion, which is expected to include new HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems and Patriot air defense systems.

Ukraine urges NATO to increase support

Amid intensifying Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga has urged NATO countries to provide at least 20 additional air defense systems. At a meeting with NATO foreign ministers, he stressed the urgency of increased support to counter Russia’s attempts to cripple Ukraine’s energy production capabilities.
