Significant emergency resources are deployed at the Brest commercial port, rue de Yokozuka, this Wednesday, December 4, 2024. Around 4 a.m., the firefighters were triggered by the start of a fire within the Bunge establishments, the global specialist in soybean meals, whose silos dominate the port facilities.
According to our information, the incident, which was quickly brought under control, occurred in one of the drying towers. No injuries were reported.
On the fire side, around thirty firefighters from the Brest barracks but also from Landerneau, Lesneven and Trégourez ensured the security of the premises, accompanied by specific equipment including a respiratory assistance vehicle (Var).
“There is no risk for the population”
On site, a site manager reassures: “The situation is under control, there is no risk for the population. The episode is not at all of the same content as in 2019.”
As a reminder, on February 27, 2019, firefighters were also dispatched to the site following the detection of methane in one of the silos. For 17 days, securing the premises required the presence of significant resources. The prospect of flooding the silo at a temperature of 110°C was considered at the time, raising fears for the environment.
As indicated on its website, Bunge is the world leader in oilseed processing and the leading producer and supplier of vegetable oils and meals for animal feed. In France, the company operates from around ten ports, including Lorient and Brest.
