At the end of a hard-fought match, the Mavericks beat the Grizzlies after scoring a devastating 18-5 in money time. Spencer Dinwiddie is the hero at the end of the game with 2 consecutive shots from the parking lot, Luka Doncic is the hero of Dallas simply with 37 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 interceptions at 11/22 shooting.
Can the Grizzlies blame the officiating? Perhaps a foul on Marcus Smart is not called at the end of the match, to give the shot of the match to PJ Washington (we will wait for the refereeing report to be published during the day to have a clear and definitive answer from the league). Perhaps the 14 shots awarded to Memphis, compared to the 44 whistled for Dallas, seem very meager, although the images are not likely to be noticeably shocking in this sense. However, Taylor Jenkins did not mince his words after the game, taking care not to put himself in a position to receive a fine from the NBA.
“I don’t know how, in an NBA Cup match, you can have this kind of difference. I’m going to be careful with my terms.”
Can the Grizzlies blame Marcus Smart? That's another question that's perhaps worth asking coming out of this match. A gross foul on Luka Doncic for giving up two shots at a time when a foul was absolutely not necessary or even desirable. Then an assist not made on Spencer Dinwiddie's second 3-point shot in money time. Then an oversight on an offensive rebound which seemed – visually – within his reach with a little more attention. Then a total stoppage of his defense which leads to a completely open shot from PJ Washington, string and folded match. Yes, he appears to have had contact with Luka Doncic and this action is subject to discussion. However, it is impossible to completely stop defending in such a moment.
The Mavericks did not hesitate to take great advantage of this advantage to return to a game which seemed to be off to a bad start after the enormous 38-22 slammed by the Grizz' in the third quarter. But you see, nothing prohibitive for Jason Kidd's men. Hustle in defense, good circulation in attack to provoke mistakes (not always very intelligent) from the opponent. And all punctuated by an exceptional sequence of shots from the parking lot, signed Luka Doncic, Spencer Dinwiddie and PJ Washington. A big victory for Dallas which secures its place for the playoff phase of the NBA Cup, and offers itself a great success against a well-known team in the West. Congratulations.
