MONTREAL – Patrik Laine scored his first in the blue-white-red uniform, and the Canadiens won 2-1 in overtime against the New York Islanders at the Bell Center on Tuesday.
Playing on the power play in the second period, Laine accepted a handover from Lane Hutson before firing a surgically precise shot past Ilya Sorokin, bringing the crowd out of their seats as the Canadiens took a 1-0 lead.
The Islanders tied the score towards the second period, and a scoreless third period set the table for an extra period. In overtime, Nick Suzuki recovered a disc passed by Mike Matheson, moved towards the net, then took advantage of his own return of the shot to get his hands on the win.
Samuel Montembeault had one of his best performances of the season without any splashes, making 30 saves in his team’s victory against the Isles.
