Do you know the “carbonara pact”? While millions of people flock each year to visit the Eternal City, a consumer association, “Consumerismo”, is campaigning to establish a “carbonara pact” in restaurants.
What is this “pact”? According to Corriere della Sierra, this consumer association wants a price limit to be set in restaurants, when customers order a plate of carbonara pasta or a pizza. All this to prevent the price of this typical dish from reaching new heights as the city expects an influx of tourists in 2025.
The idea was put forward to the municipality of Rome, as well as to restaurateurs. “Today we are launching the proposal to the municipality of Rome and the associations to establish a controlled price for traditional Roman dishes, but also for pizza, another food in high demand by tourists (and which risks increasing prices). price), especially since these products entail minimal costs for restaurateurs”, can we read.
A pact for dishes at 12 euros
Thus, this pact that the restaurateurs would sign, would encourage them to offer these dishes at a maximum of 12 euros. The Consumerismo Non Profit association has already sent an official request to restaurant organizations.
For the association, the idea is not to force restaurateurs who charge higher prices but to “boycott” them, in particular by posting online, an application that would bring together all the restaurants that have taken part in the game.
The association also points out the idea that due to too strong an increase in prices, residents would no longer be able to afford restaurants as regularly. In the end, everyone would win, according to them.
And if consumer associations are so worried about prices, it is because Rome is hosting the Jubilee in 2025. Organized every 25 years by the Catholic Church, the Jubilee is intended as a time of conversion and penance for the faithful with its long list of cultural and religious events – masses, exhibitions, conferences, concerts. In all, 33 million pilgrims are expected in the eternal city.
