Malaysia and Thailand are facing a second wave of heavy rains and potential flooding this week, authorities announced Monday (December 2). Since last week, 27 people have died and more than half a million homes in neighboring Southeast Asian countries have been affected by torrential rains and flooding that authorities say are the most severe for decades.
The Thai Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) on Monday (December 2, 2024) warned residents in fourteen provinces in southern Thailand to prepare for flash floods, rapid runoff and persistent flooding between December 3 and 5, 2024.
In Malaysia, the number of people in evacuation shelters has fallen to around 128,000 people, compared to 152,000 on Sunday, according to the disaster management agency. The Malaysian Meteorological Department on Monday forecast a convergence of winds in the worst-hit states of Kelantan and Terengganu from December 3 to 4, which it said could potentially lead to thunderstorms and heavy rain during this period.
