The subject that is currently on everyone’s lips in Belgium is to know what Vincent Mannaert will decide for Domenico Tedesco now that he is sports director at the Belgian Union.
For the time being, the coach should stay in place but how long that will last is difficult to say. What would especially pose a problem is the severance pay, which will decrease over time. The stay of someone who has just missed two competitions in a row is therefore perhaps only a question of time.
Who to replace Tedesco?
But then, who to replace him? The question was asked again on the set of ‘La Tribune’ and Marc Wilmots chose. The one who held the position from 2012 to 2016 was quite clear on the subject, discussing the candidates who are free and those who are not.
Vincent (Kompany), but it’s not possible. Karel Geraerts is someone I’ve worked with and is also very good. He knows Belgian football well and I saw him manage the pressure in front of 60,000 people. (Philippe) Clément would also be a good person,” he analyzed.
“Why not if he is well surrounded”
Philippe Albert would see another name occupying the position: “I spoke of Hein Vanhaezebrouck, but I also mentioned Marc. I remain convinced that at the moment, this is the person that he has to. He’s already done it once! And Geraerts, if he’s well surrounded, why not.”
If Stephan Streker would see Kompany combining his role as Bayern coach with that of selector, this is not the case for Wilmots and Albert, who both consider this impossible.
Whatever happens, it is now up to Mannaert to decide, with the other members of the board. And if things don’t change, we will then have to help Tedesco do much better, especially during the World Cup qualifying campaign.
