A Russian attack submarine was detected on Thursday, November 28, off the Philippine coast in the South China Sea, the local army informed.

A Russian attack submarine was detected off the coast of the Philippines, in the South China Sea, the Philippine army announced on Monday, December 2. The submarine, a UFA 490, was spotted the previous Thursday, November 28, 148 kilometers west of Cape Calavite, on the island of Mindoro.
“Any intrusion into our West Philippine Sea, our Exclusive Economic Zone and our baselines is very worrying”reacted the Philippine head of state, using the Filipino term and not that of “South China Sea” to designate the waters located immediately to the west of the archipelago of more than 7,000 islands.

The Philippines sent a plane and a ship to inspect the submarine, whose crew said they were waiting for good weather conditions to return to Vladivostok, Russia. The Philippine Navy spokesperson for the South China Sea, Roy Vincent Trinidad, described this situation as a “non alarming”. “But we are surprised because it is a truly unique submarine”he told AFP.
The UFA submarine, which was last seen on Sunday, is 74 meters long and is capable of firing Kalibr-PL missiles with a range of up to 12,000 kilometers, according to the Russian state news agency TASS.
