The destiny of Ukraine is not the only one to be suddenly put on hold by the election of Donald Trump. In Washington, the tide has turned and Europe is suddenly disoriented. Just a few months ago, its leaders were counting on a strategic defeat of Russia and declared themselves determined “to bring the Russian economy to its knees”. The President of the Commission herself vowed to support Ukraine “until victory”. No trace of these ambitions since November 5. Dazed by the success of Donald Trump and forced to urgently review their strategy, Europeans find themselves marginalized, as the recent G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro showed. Support for the Ukrainian cause no longer convinces the rest of the world.
Europeans are wondering: will they be invited to the discussions imagined by Donald Trump? And then: how do the Americans intend to use them? Will it be necessary, as certain rumors suggest in Washington, to make troops available to ensure control of the possible demilitarized zone? Or, in the absence of Ukraine joining NATO, offer equivalent security guarantees, i.e. a promise from Germany, France or the United Kingdom for example, to go to war against alongside Ukraine in the event of further aggression? Here is Europe on the defensive. Worse, it finds itself faced with the risk of being among the losers in a war raging on its borders.
