In Paris, a man throws his two children out of a window and then commits suicide: what we know

Late on Saturday, July 6, 2024, a man committed suicide in Paris, in the 14th arrondissement. He had first thrown his two children out of a window. Here is what we know, this Sunday early afternoon.

Double attempted murder followed by suicide

The 49-year-old man threw his two children out of the window of his apartment on the fifth floor of a modest building in the 14th arrondissement of Paris on Saturday evening, before killing himself by jumping into the void. According to the first elements gathered from the investigations, relayed by a police source, the man’s action probably occurred following an argument with his partner. The events occurred around 8:30 p.m., according to the source close to the case at theAFP.

The man died, while his two children, born in 2019 and 2021, “see their vital prognosis at risk”said the Paris prosecutor’s office, confirming a source close to the case.

An investigation opened

The public prosecutor has entrusted the investigations to the PP’s juvenile protection brigade (DRPJ): an investigation has been opened for “attempted murder of minors under 15 years of age”, concerning the two children, and for “investigation of the causes of death”, concerning their father.

A medical-psychological emergency unit (CUMP) has been activated.

A neighborhood in shock

Local residents described to theAFP a scene “surrealist”particularly “shocking”. “It’s shocking, many of us are going to be shocked.”commented a resident who introduced herself as a resident of the ten-story building where the family lives.

Two witnesses said that the two children had fallen onto a lawn on the esplanade of this large residence, which includes social housing. According to one of them, children were playing there at the time of the tragedy.

A video capturing part of the scene, consulted by theAFPwas shot from one of the many surrounding windows.

“We heard noises, screams”said Sophie (she did not give her name), a restaurateur who lives in a tower block nearby. “At that moment you see someone lying on the ground on the asphalt, a child on the ground, the second one over there”she continues, pointing to the place. “It’s surreal”.

According to a neighbor on the sixth floor of the building, who did not give her name, the family had moved there “just a year ago”. The man “was always smiling, he put his little girl on his back, we saw each other at the park, we said hello”confides this 19-year-old young woman.

She says she has never “heard nothing” possible disputes within the couple. “That’s what’s shocking: we saw him smile, but we didn’t know that behind his smiles, something like that was hidden.”she says.
