Finally, the predictions were respected: Donatella Di Pietrantonio with The fragile age (Einaudi) winner of the 2024 Strega Prize. The writer from Abruzzo won with 189 votes, followed by Winter (The Ship of Theseus) by Dario Voltolini with 142 preferences and, in third place, Who speaks and who remains silent? (Sellerio) by Chiara Valerio (138).

A split ranking, the final, which sees the last three writers compete very far, in terms of preferences, from the podium. Fourth place went to Fix the Universe (Mondadori) by Raffaella Romagnolo (83), followed by Novel without humans (Feltrinelli) by Paolo Di Paolo (66). Bringing up the rear with only 25 preferences Autobiogrammatic(fax minimum) par Tommaso Giartosio.

“I promise that I will use my written and spoken voice to defend the rights that my generation of women fought so hard for and that today are no longer taken for granted,” said the emotional winner, already in the top five in 2021 with her novel. Southern villageand previously winner of the Campiello Prize in 2017 with The littlea novel that made her famous among the public.

Strega Awards 2024, the final ranking

The evening, broadcast live on Rai 3 from 11pm, will be hosted by the couple formed by Geppi Cucciari – for the fourth consecutive time – and Pino Strabioli, already at the helm of the final twice, in 2016 and 2019. Absent from the ceremony, less attended than in previous editions (about 300 fewer people than last year), is the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, who made a fool of himself in 2023, when he replied to the presenter that he would “try to read the books”, after voting for them as a juror.

The winning novel: the plot

Amanda barely takes one of the last trains and returns home, to that town near Pescara from which she had fled. One look is enough for her mother to understand that something inside her has gone out: at the beginning in Milan, she had the lights of the city in her eyes, now she seems to want to simply disappear, she locks herself in her room and hardly speaks. Lucia would like to protect her from everything, even at the cost of suffocating her, but there is a secret that she cannot hide from her.

What is the best novel nominated for the Strega Prize (in my opinion)?

Under the Dent de Loup, on a piece of land that belongs to their family and is now tempting for real estate speculators, you can still see the remains of a campsite where a terrible event took place many years ago. Sometimes time decides to turn back the clock: under this mountain that Lucia has always tried to forget, among the pastures and woods of her fragile age, all the threads are taut. Caught between the old father so rooted in the earth and this daughter more stubborn than him, Lucia understands that there is a force that runs through her. Perhaps our only legacy is our wounds. With her rough, vibrant and profound writing, capable of making us feel the weight of a look and the sound of an unanswered question, Donatella Di Pietrantonio touches a whole new tension in this novel.
