While humanitarian workers have been paying a heavy price since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, the American NGO World Central Kitchen (WCK) announced on Saturday, November 30, the suspension of its operations in the Gaza Strip, after a fatal Israeli strike on a vehicle in which some of its employees were traveling. “We are heartbroken to learn that a vehicle carrying colleagues from World Central Kitchen was hit by an Israeli airstrike in Gaza”declared the NGO in a press release without specifying the number of its colleagues affected, saying for the moment it only had“incomplete information” on the facts.

The Israeli military has confirmed that one of the Palestinian aid workers whose death Gaza Civil Defense announced on Saturday worked for World Central Kitchen. The IDF states in a statement that it is a “terrorist” Who “infiltrated Israel and participated in the October 7 massacre in Kibbutz Nir Oz”very close to the Gaza Strip, and which moreover “he worked for the WCK organization”.

In April, seven humanitarian workers from the NGO had were killed in a strike while distributing food in the Gaza Strip. WCK was founded in 2010 by Spanish-American chef José Andres and his wife. The organization notably intervened for food distribution in Haiti, Ukraine and Morocco during the earthquake of February 2023. Its teams as well as the Palestinian cooks working with it have served tens of millions of meals in the Gaza Strip since October 2023, as WCK explained to New York Times(New window).
