The French designer and artist received the 2024 Töpffer Grand Prix for comics on Thursday evening in Geneva for all of his work. The other winners of the Töpffer prizes are Juliette Mancini for her album “La Hate du Poil” and Fanny Rose for her work “On dit que c'est une stamen libre”.
Endowed with 10,000 francs, the Töpffer Grand Prix for comics 2024 was awarded to Winshluss during a ceremony organized at the Haute école d'art et de design (HEAD). Winshluss, 54, is distinguished by his scathing humor and his critical view of society.
This self-taught, jack-of-all-trades artist started in comics in the mid-1990s by publishing his drawings in fanzines. At the turn of the 2000s, he established himself as a leading author of “Requins Marteaux”, a publishing house with an underground profile.
He became known to the general public in 2009 by winning the Fauve d'or at the Angoulême festival (F) with “Pinocchio”, a pop and trash reinterpretation of the tale of the same name. In 2016, Winshluss received the Golden Nugget from the Montreuil Children's Book Fair (F) for “In the Dark and Mysterious Forest”, an album which has just been adapted for the cinema.
The jury awarded the Töpffer Geneva Prize (10,000 francs) to Juliette Mancini, a French designer based in Geneva. The jury notes his excellent use of the language of comics to evoke a subject which is not superficial, since it touches on a subject that is both intimate and public, having implications on the condition of women and the perception of femininity.
Poetry
The Töpffer Prize for young comics (5,000 francs) goes to Fanny Rose, 23, who completed her training at the Higher School of Comics and Illustration (ESBDI) of the CFP Arts in Geneva. She is distinguished for her work “On dit que c’est une stamen libre”, halfway between a graphic novel and a collection of poetry. This prize supports local emerging artists by rewarding the project of an unpublished work by an author aged 15 to 30 years old.
The awards ceremony organized at the Haute école d'art et de design (HEAD) took place in the presence of the cantonal authorities and the City of Geneva. For more than twenty years, the 9th art has been supported in Geneva by the granting of the Rodolphe Töpffer Prizes, named in homage to the illustrious Genevan, founding figure of comics.
