Around 1:30 a.m., firefighters from the Quebec Fire Protection Service (SPCIQ) were called to the scene of a fire in a residence on 25th Street in the Limoilou sector.
When they arrived, police officers from the Quebec City Police Service (SPVQ) were already on the scene and the occupants of the building had already been evacuated. The building contains three apartments.
SPVQ agents were able to confirm the presence of smoke coming from a dwelling in the basement.
They also treated “an individual who suffered significant burns to the upper body,” indicates Alexandre Lajoie, spokesperson for the SPCIQ.
The victim, a man in his fifties, was transported to a hospital. A second resident was treated by paramedics. He was bothered by smoke.
“We do not fear for their lives,” continues the spokesperson.
The other residents of the basement apartment were also evacuated. “A little boy was pulled out of the window,” said Ms. Lajoie.
Stove fire
According to the spokesperson, it was an accidental fire caused by “a cooking error”. In order to control the flames, around twenty firefighters were dispatched to the site.
The accommodation having been affected by the flames and smoke cannot be re-entered. “The other accommodations are OK.”
