The government has published a recall notice for Mont d'Or cheeses in connection with the “risk of presence” of a bacteria causing gastroenteritis. At least 71 people are reported to have fallen ill.
Amateur alert. Mont d'Or cheeses contaminated by bacteria are the subject of a recall launched by the government site Rappel Conso published on November 21. All batches produced since September 10 by Fruitière des Jarrons, an agricultural cooperative based in Ville-du-Pont, in Doubs, are the subject of this recall and people who have purchased these cheeses are strongly invited not to consume them .
The cause is the possible presence of Yersinia enterocolitica bacteria, which can cause gastroenteritis. According to online media L'Informed, 71 people fell ill after consuming contaminated cheese, but “no serious cases have been documented at this stage.”
Symptoms 2 to 7 days after consumption
The media specifies that the recall notice was sent by France to around twenty countries where the cheeses were exported, mainly in Europe but also as far as Asia, in this case Singapore.
“Yersinia enterocolitica infections cause acute gastroenteritis accompanied by fever, diarrhea and abdominal pain, and generally occurs 2 to 7 days after consumption,” specifies the Rappel Conso website in its instructions.
Mont d'Or cheeses, which are among the last seasonal cheeses in France, are produced from early autumn until spring in the Jura. Recognizable by their spruce wood box, they are renowned for their “woody and creamy” taste.
