This is what is provided for in a bill presented to the Peruvian Congress which will have to ratify… or not the proposal.
The text submitted for consideration by MEPs indicates that workers in the public and private sectors will be able to benefit from a day of paid leave after the death of their pet. However, the bereaved will have to compensate for this day within six months following the death of the animal. The initiators of this proposal say they want to alleviate “the emotional impact of the loss of a mascot” and establish new measures related to animal welfare.
“To access this license, the worker must have previously informed his employer or his superior that he has domestic animals, registered in the National Register of Companion Animals,” we read in the draft.
The text also proposes the creation of a national pet registry which unifies the scattered municipal registers.
According to a survey by the Peruvian Society of Market and Opinion Research (CPI), 60% of urban households in this country, or around four million, own a pet.
Dogs and cats are the favorite pets of Peruvians with 79% and 42% respectively.
The country has nearly five million dogs and 2.9 million cats.
