It was therefore on her RN label alone that Marion Latus, 31, already a regional councillor, garnered 30.26% of the votes last Sunday (almost twice as much as in 2022), third by 23 votes behind Thomas Mesnier, which means she is taking part in a three-way race and has a real chance of sitting in the Assembly.

“I didn’t ask to be a candidate”

“In every election I ran in, I never asked to be a candidate,” Marion Latus wants to remind us. “This time, too. We needed a candidate in the first constituency, and I said yes.” She settled in April in Saint-Quentin-de-Chalais, in the far south of the department. It was there, in the village of Parcaud, that she set up her self-employed interior design business on June 4, five days before the European elections, after trying her hand at real estate. She didn’t go to vote. The reason was that she didn’t have time to register on the lists.

Marion Latus is discreet, self-effacing, rarely engaging in discussion, with answers formatted by the language elements of the RN. “I always heard her say ‘I’m a good little soldier, I do what I’m told'”, reports Aurore de Clisson, former activist of the 2e circo, which welcomed her “with open arms” and has since slammed the door on the party. “I am not self-effacing,” she corrects, “I am discreet, I do not like to put myself in the spotlight, people want less bling-bling politics but speaking in public does not bother me.”

“Withdrawn and introverted”

The former nurse, who worked in a nursing home and then at the Châtellerault hospital, which she left “for health problems”, has several campaigns behind her in Vienne: legislative elections in 2022, departmental elections in 2021 and in the meantime the 2020 municipal elections in Châtellerault. She sat in the opposition until her resignation in 2022.

“She didn’t make much of an impression.” The sentence is signed by Éric Audebert, former RN elected official from Châtellerault, a fringe of Le Pen senior, sidelined by the arrival of Marion Latus. “She works, she is sincere in her commitment, she really has the RN ideology but she lacks a little experience, a lot even. It’s when she’s up against the wall that you see the mason.” What is the mason like, we ask? “Young.” However, he didn’t spend long with her. “No one knows her well, that’s the problem. I haven’t seen her since then but the day I do, I’ll tell her what I think, that she’s abandoned the post.” His running mate Jean-Pierre Michiel, is full of praise. “She’s discreet and not very expressive but she’s balanced, thoughtful and she knows how to keep her word. I like her not excessive side.”

Françoise Méry, a PS opponent, was herself surprised by her rare positions, focused solely on the hospital and businesses. “We didn’t have the impression that she was the voice of the RN. She had very measured positions, on which we could even have agreed.” “She was rather notable for her absences,” recalls David Simon, an opposition elected official (Renaissance). We never saw her in committee or in council, she made two or three interventions, notably on the hospital. She is very introverted.”

At the Regional Council

The RN group to which Marion Latus and Caroline Colombier belong, abstained on a subsidy for Secours Catholique and Secours Populaire. “When we vote against it, it’s because there is a political ideology behind it or it doesn’t address the greatest number of French people,” justifies Marion Latus, without being able to specify the political ideology that Secours Populaire would carry.
