The price of coffee has more than doubled in one year, leading to an increase in prices for producers, but also in stores. Customers notice this bitterly.
On Thursday, November 28, a coffee roaster experienced an unprecedented crisis situation when it came to sourcing beans. In 2024, coffee beans will reach a record price for fifty years, three euros more per kg. “We make 700 tonnes of coffee per year. Imagine, we take one euro, that’s 700,000 more (…) For a company like ours, an SME, it’s not viable”explains Cécile Chapuis, CEO of Chapuis cafés.
The price of coffee has more than doubled in one year, going from 154 to 328 dollars per pound. In bistros, the price is reflected at the counter. “It’s becoming quite complicated to get a coffee for less than 2 euros,” notes a customer. In supermarkets, coffee has increased by 32.4% in three years. Malongo, one of the biggest sellers in France, warns that the package may still increase by 40 cents. Vietnam and Brazil, which account for 48% of global production, both experienced a disastrous harvest.
