New York police on Thursday arrested a group of pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel protesters who briefly interrupted the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade by attempting to block the parade in front of the Ronald McDonald float.
The 98th annual parade, broadcast across the country, is an iconic Thanksgiving tradition in the United States. Giant balloons depicting cartoon characters parade past, accompanied by marching bands and popular music groups performing live. This parade attracts thousands of spectators who line the streets of Manhattan to watch it.
“The protesters were taken into custody without incident,” the New York Police Department said in a statement.

The exact number of arrests has not been specified, and legal proceedings are underway, added the police department.
About twenty demonstrators sat in the middle of the street in the pouring rain, while others held up a banner reading: “Don’t celebrate the genocide” and “Arms embargo now”. All under the smiling gaze of Ronald McDonald floating above them, as photos taken by Reuters show.
According to a Reuters witness, the police present at the scene first asked the demonstrators to leave the scene without intervening. Subsequently, a team of police officers on bicycles intervened to disperse the protesters and make arrests.
