Heavy snow covered the Seoul metropolitan area for the second day in a row on Thursday as several districts of the capital received up to 40 cm of snow. A snow alert is in effect for the entire capital until 10 a.m. this Thursday morning while the cumulative total reached 40.2 cm in the district of Gwanak and 27.1 cm in that of Seongbuk, according to the snow agency. Yonhap Press.

On Wednesday, Seoul recorded the record snowfall for a day in November since weather observations began in 1907. The new record coincided with Seoul’s first snowfall of the season.

Traffic was slowed not only in Seoul but also in its surrounding areas as authorities closed some roads, notably in Gwangjin district, in eastern Seoul, where a tree apparently fell under the weight of snow.

Korea Railroad Corp. (KORAIL) indicated that traffic on certain metro lines was disrupted due to snow removal operations underway on the tracks. The company said it plans to add 10 trains to the capital’s lines, including Line 1 and Gyeongui-Central, to cope with heavy traffic during morning rush hours.

The city of Seoul said more than 11,000 employees and nearly 20,000 pieces of equipment were mobilized to clear snow from roads. Furthermore, metro traffic during peak hours, where the frequency has been increased, has been extended by 30 minutes, from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. A snow alert was also issued for other areas across the country, including Chuncheon, Wonju and Hoengseong in Gangwon Province.
