Paris 2024 Olympics: RC Lens, Éric Sikora… Relive the day of the flame in Pas-de-Calais

A day after the North, the Olympic flame continued its journey in the Hauts-de-France, this time in the Pas-de-Calais. The day’s relay started shortly after 8 am, from Calais. Despite the rain, good humor was the order of the day. A costume parade, flash mob and boats accompanied the flame from the beach, where it started, to the city’s Grand Théâtre.

The relay then continued to Saint-Omer. There, schoolchildren were present to welcome the Olympic flame. Before heading to Boulogne-sur-Mer, where it visited an old keep built in the 12th century. After passing through Berck-sur-Mer, the relay continued on its way to Arras and its cathedral. Then it visited the Olhain park of the Maisnil-lès-Ruitz leisure center.

Finally, the Olympic flame went to the Lens-Liévin urban community. It first shone in front of the Louvre-Lens and even crossed the museum’s Galerie du Temps. The flame of course made a stop in front of the Bollaert-Delelis stadium, the home of RC Lens. Its journey ended just a stone’s throw away, and the cauldron was lit by Éric Sikora, a former club legend. The president of the Sang et Or, Joseph Oughourlian, was also present.

The collective relay of the day was dedicated to wrestling. It was led by its captain, Régine Le Gleut-Leturcq, who has participated in the Olympic Games five times as a referee. The double U 23 European champion Emma Luttenauer was also there.

Among the other sports figures who participated in this relay, Éric Srecki, gold medallist fencer at Seoul 1988 and Barcelona 1992, was there. Para-athletes Karine Boucher (golf), Théotime Malbesin (athletics), Louis Leroy (marathon) and Julien Mameaux (ultra trail) also participated.

This Thursday, July 4, the continuation of the Olympic relay will take place in the Somme. The cauldron will be lit at the end of the day in the city of Amiens.
