Mathieu Maheux-Dumont, pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree murder at the Lac-Mégantic Alexandre Giroux courthouse in March 2022.

On Wednesday at the Lac-Mégantic courthouse, Maheux-Dumont was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 13 years.

His lawyer Christian Raymond explained that there was a mitigating factor: the fact that the attacker had been depressed for two years at the time of the events and that he was the one who contacted 911 after the attack and went to the Sûreté du Québec.

Four weeks of trial

This means that this plea cuts short four weeks of trial which were scheduled to start on September 9.

Along the way, the accused was declared fit to stand trial after an evaluation.

The 33-year-old man, a former employee of Transport Robert, was no longer working for the Tafisa company at the time of the events.

On March 21, 2022, Mathieu Maheux-Dumont showed up at the Lac-Mégantic particle board and wood panel manufacturing plant, where he fatally attacked 36-year-old Alexandre Giroux with a bladed weapon.

Three days before the tragedy, an employee of an insurance company contacted the Sûreté du Québec to report disturbing comments from the accused, who was also a client.

The man is also banned from owning firearms for ten years after his release.
