New York judge postpones sentencing for Trump in hidden payments case

Former US President Donald Trump’s sentencing in a case involving hidden payments has been postponed until September, US media reported on Tuesday.

Judge Juan Merchan informed Trump’s lawyers and Manhattan prosecutors of his decision to postpone sentencing from July 11 to September 18, CBS News reported.

The decision came hours after Judge Merchan received letters from both sides in the case, following a Supreme Court ruling that former presidents enjoy a presumption of criminal immunity for official acts while in the White House, handing Trump the victory.

With the new date, sentencing will not take place until after the Republican National Convention scheduled for July 15-18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg also said he was not opposed to delaying sentencing.

“While we find the defendant’s arguments without merit, we do not oppose his request for leave to file a brief, nor his putative request to adjourn sentencing pending the determination of his motion,” Bragg said.

Trump was convicted last May on 34 counts related to secret payments from adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Trump thus became the first former US president to be convicted of criminal acts.
