Finally, some good news for consumers: the price of certain basic products such as sugar or eggs has decreased in supermarkets. This was noted following a price comparison developed by the data firm Daltix on behalf of the daily newspaper The Newspaper.
According to this same analysis, it was revealed that the price of the household basket increased in Belgium by 26% since 2021. Nevertheless, a certain stabilization was observed in the comparison, since the curve experienced a very slight upward fluctuation during this last year, with a rate equivalent to 1%.
The price of the household basket has barely increased in one year
The price of the household basket has increased very little in one year and that of certain products has even been reduced, according to the latest price comparison carried out by the firm specializing in data Daltix at the request of the The Newspaper. This design office is two-thirds owned by the Colruyt brand. Its main mission is to monitor daily prices in all supermarkets in order to spot the slightest change in the prices offered to consumers.
As a reminder, the household basket is an indicator mainly used to measure the price level and inflation in a country. It is therefore an index established from the comparison of the prices at which basic products, often present in household shopping lists, are sold in the most popular points of sale.
In the news, the Daltix office analyzed the price of 31 products in four different supermarkets in Belgium, on the dates of January 1, 2021, November 5, 2023 and November 5, 2024. It was revealed that in one year, the price of this basket increased by 1%, but 26% compared to 2021.
It is the basic products that are most affected by the fall in prices
The price of several products has remained stable compared to that displayed last year, and some are even less expensive. This is the case for sugar, eggs, flour or bread, basic products usually found in shopping carts. The prices of certain well-known brand products, such as spreads, also remained stable. When it comes to fruits and vegetables, there are still price fluctuationsbut Daltix believes that this is completely normal, following the harvest trend.
