Cloud gaming arrives on PlayStation Portal
Sony announces a major update for its portable device, PlayStation Portal, which now includes cloud gaming functionality in beta phase. Reserved for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers, this new feature allows you to play a selection of more than 120 PS5 games from the PlayStation Plus catalog, without requiring a connection to a PS5 console. Available titles include popular games like Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Please note, only PS5 games are supported at the moment; PS4 and PS3 games are excluded from this initial phase.
Technical conditions and service limits
Cloud gaming through PlayStation Portal is limited to a maximum resolution of 1080p at 60 frames per second, which requires a stable internet connection of at least 13 Mbps as a minimum. This service, however, remains subject to certain restrictions: it is not possible to play games purchased on the PlayStation Store (unlike the update proposed for Xbox Cloud Gaming mentioned yesterday). Nor to access features like game trials, voice chat or 3D audio. Despite these limitations, this is great news for anyone who wants to enjoy PS5 games without owning the console!
Technical improvements and accessibility
In addition to cloud gaming, the update brings improved audio settings, including the much-anticipated minimum volume reduction. An additional option allows you to adjust settings for PlayStation Link compatible devices directly from PlayStation Portal. The deployment of this update has started in several regions, notably in Europe. Access to the beta program is available in countries such as France, Japan or the United States, with user feedback expected to refine the service.
An attractive positioning
With this update, PlayStation Portal becomes an economical alternative to traditional consoles. Priced at around 220 euros, it constitutes an accessible gateway to enjoy the PlayStation universe via the cloud. This competitive price could appeal to players looking for a portable gaming solution without the hardware constraints of a console. Sony is starting to compete with similar streaming services offered by competitors like Microsoft, and that's great news!
