Senators from the American left, who accuse the Biden administration of being ” accomplice “ d’“atrocities” in Gaza, failed Wednesday to block an arms sale to Israel in a Senate vote.
The initiative was launched by independent senator Bernie Sanders, who denounced the “total war led by the extremist government” of the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, “against the Palestinian people”.
During a passionate speech in the American Senate, the left-wing elected official spoke of the “millions of extremely poor people in Gaza, driven from their homes” and the “thousands of children today suffering from hunger and malnutrition”. “The United States is complicit in all these atrocities. We are financing these atrocities and this complicity must stop”he urged.
The resolutions voted on Wednesday would have blocked the Pentagon from sending a new $20 billion package to Israel. They all failed to be adopted, a large number of elected officials displaying unwavering support for Israel, a historic ally of the United States.
Republican leader Mitch McConnell said blocking this arms sale “would only strengthen and embolden terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah”.
