Why is Auston Matthews currently in Munich? This is a question that burns on the lips in Toronto while the captain of the Maple Leafs is on the floor with a mysterious upper body injury.
Matthews is currently in Germany to visit a clinic he has attended in the past, according to Sportsnet informant Elliotte Friedman, who calmed things down after speaking with several sources on Tuesday.
“An operation is not in the plans and has never been considered,” Friedman said. The European journey was an opportunity to benefit from various treatments in addition to those already administered to treat his injury.
“The visit does not in itself represent a disavowal of the Maple Leafs medical team; players regularly ask for a second opinion. In fact, a Maple Leafs doctor made the trip with Matthews.
Matthews played his last game on November 3, in a 2–1 loss to the Minnesota Wild. Before his absence, he had a fairly ordinary start to the season by his standards with 11 points, including five goals, in 13 games.
