Guillaume Senez and Romain Duris are releasing a new film, “A Missing Part”. This feature film addresses a little-known, yet problematic, theme that is rife in Japan: child theft. Explanations.
In this fiction based on real events, Jay (played by Romain Duris) goes looking for his daughter, kidnapped by her mother after the couple broke up.
Although this situation may seem surreal to us, child abduction by one parent is common in Japan. “We met French expatriates who told us about this problem of child abduction and non-respected alternating custody.”, explains Romain Duris. “And it’s true that it touched us. Romain and I said to ourselves that there was a great film to make. And above all, there was a kind of continuity with “Our Battles”, to continue to explore parenthood“.
In the land of the rising sun, children are “considered furniture“, adds Guillaume. “And we don’t move a table from one home to another, from one week to the next. It’s very surprising. We are talking about 150,000 to 200,000 children kidnapped each year by one of the two parents.“.
Japan, a fascinating country
Besides this problem, Japan is a country that amazes both the director and the main actor. “There is a particular atmosphere, a culture, obviously. (…) I took calligraphy lessons because brushes and ink fascinate me. Obviously, the food… But in short, there is a whole art of living”, confides Romain Duris.
“There is their curiosity about the rest of the world because they are still very sharp. In the music, it shows, in the clothes too. There is something very active which fascinates me“, he concluded.
