Pro-Iranian militia attacks: Israel urges UN to pressure Iraq

The Israeli Foreign Minister on Monday urged the UN Security Council to “act urgently” for Iraq to stop drone attacks against Israel perpetrated from its territory by “pro-Iranian militias”.

“This evening, I sent a letter to the President of the UN Security Council in which I call for immediate action regarding the activity of pro-Iranian militias in Iraq, whose territory is being used to attack Israel” , writes Gideon Saar on X.

“I called on the Security Council to act urgently to ensure that the Iraqi government respects its obligations under international law and to stop these attacks against Israel,” added Mr. Saar.

“The Iraqi government has a responsibility to prevent its territory from being used as a base for attacks against other nations,” reads a copy of the letter posted by Mr. Saar on his X account.

“Israel calls on the Iraqi government to fulfill its obligations and take immediate measures to stop and prevent its attacks,” the text continues, noting “that Israel has the inherent right to defend itself, as provided for in the Charter of the United Nations, and to take all necessary measures to protect itself and its citizens against hostile acts […] Iranian-backed militias in Iraq.

In Iraq, Shiite paramilitary groups created in the chaos following the 2003 U.S. invasion have formed an alliance called the “Islamic Resistance of Iraq,” part of what Iran calls the “Axis of Resistance” in Iraq. Israel.

The “Islamic Resistance of Iraq” regularly claims responsibility for explosive drone attacks on Israel. Many of these aircraft are intercepted by Israeli air defense, but in early October a drone fired from Iraq killed two Israeli soldiers and injured 24 others on a military base in the Golan.
