The situation would have degenerated during the M18 AA match between the Drummondville Voltigeurs and the Outaouais Olympics. Spectators then decided to come to blows.
The situation is such that the police were called around 8 p.m. regarding a general fight at the Frank-Robinson arena, located in the Aylmer sector.
The Gatineau Police Department reports having been obliged to intervene in a similar situation, Friday evening, during another minor hockey tournament played at the Paul-et-Isabelle-Duchesnay arena.
The police say they intervened around 9 p.m. due to an altercation between the parents of the two teams.
Two people were escorted out of the arena by police.
No arrests have been made in connection with the two events, it is said. However, the police force invites people who may have been victims of assault during these events to come and meet the officers at the station.
Noovo Info tried to contact the president of the Aylmer Minor Hockey Association, Daniel Dupuis, also president of the tournament, but without success.
The vice-president, however, confided by telephone that he found the situation unfortunate.
These fights occur at the same time as Hockey Quebec’s awareness campaign, “Restore our Hockey” is in full swing, which aims for hockey to evolve towards a more inclusive and respectful culture.
Parents pointed the finger
RDS hockey analyst and former National Hockey League player Bruno Gervais explains that events like this can occur on the ice during a minor hockey match.
“But when it starts to spill over into adults, who should serve as a model for self-control, it taints the sport,” he lamented.
