Assizes of Hainaut: Daniel Bellens and Marie Tenret are guilty of a violent robbery and a murder, committed in Ronquières in 2017

After several hours of deliberation behind closed doors, the jury of the Assize Court rendered its verdict in the context of the violent theft of an undetermined quantity of jewelry, perpetrated on the night of August 22 to 23, 2017 in Ronquières (Braine- le-Comte), to the detriment of Marie Delhoux, 88 years old.

Daniel Bellens is guilty of theft with violence or threats, with break-in, escalation or false key, committed at night, by two or more people, with use of a vehicle to ensure their escape, to the detriment of a vulnerable person.

He is guilty of the murder of Marie Delhoux, who died a week later of head trauma as a result of the blows received during the attack.

Marie Tenret is guilty of the theft and its aggravating circumstances, and also guilty of the murder of the old lady.

Facts

Marie Delhoux, who lives alone in her house located rue du Pied d’eau, was the victim of a theft during the night of August 22 to 23, 2017. Injured in the face, the almost blind old lady called her neighbors around 1:00 a.m. and confided to her loved ones that she was attacked by several people, including a woman. She died a week later in hospital.

Three years later, the name of a suspect was revealed following the discovery of poor quality DNA on the victim’s pajamas. This is Daniel Bellens, an offender already sentenced to life imprisonment for a robbery with murder in 2005. Nicknamed the Gypsy, he has been on parole since August 4, 2017.

The analysis of his telephone allows Marie Tenret to be confused, who admits to having conveyed it, several times after his release from prison, in particular a few days after his birthday, August 17, in the Braine region. However, she no longer remembers whether it is Braine-le-Comte or Braine l’Alleud.

During the trial, they denied being involved in this affair.

The verdict

Concerning Daniel Bellens, his guilt is established beyond all reasonable doubt since his DNA was found on the sleeves of the pajamas worn by the victim. Marie Tenret declared that she had driven him to Ronquières and Daniel Bellens’ GSM picked up the antennas which covered the area. The next day, he consulted sites to resell gold, the object of the theft.

Concerning Marie Tenret, the jurors had no doubt either because of a combination of elements: her telephone which activated the antenna near the crime scene before and during the commission of it. She used her vehicle to get there and the victim confided to her loved ones, just after the incident, that she had been attacked by several people, including a woman.

Finally, the intent to kill is established by the numerous and violent blows delivered to the head of an elderly and vulnerable person. The jurors consider that by adopting such behavior, the perpetrators accepted the fatal consequences of their actions.

The debate on the sentence will take place this Tuesday, June 25.
