After their online petition which collected nearly 20,000 signatures last September, the association for “defending the interests of animals” PAZ (Zoopolis Animal Project) has no nothing to let go to achieve its objective: the closure of the Tête d'Or zoo in Lyon.

By their side, 15 animal defense associations sent a letter to the environmentalist mayor of Lyon Grégory Doucet, who continues to refuse to close the zoo. Without a response, they threaten to demonstrate on site on Saturday November 30, 2024 to demand “the placement of animals in shelters”.

“Wild animals have no place in enclosures”

The signatories challenge the mayor of Lyon in a letter sent on October 31: “During the 2020 municipal campaign you declared that 'wild animals have no place in enclosures'. We fully share this vision. »

Despite Grégory Doucet's anti-captivity speeches during the campaign for the 2020 municipal elections, the Town Hall still does not seem to want to move forward on the subject of the zoo. Since March 2024, deputy Gautier Chapuis no longer responds to PAZ. The Free Life association has proposed placement solutions to the Town Hall for several animals, notably Amur panthers, but the Town Hall has not taken up the matter.

But this letter remained unanswered, deplores PAZ. This Monday, November 18, the association is taking advantage of the participatory budget organized by the town hall to demand “the giraffe placement of the Parc de la Tête d’Or zoo into a sanctuary and transform their enclosure into a mini-awareness museum”.

A demonstration for giraffes

“The position has not changed since 2020. It is still arriving at a park only dedicated to endangered species with larger enclosures and more vegetation”, defended Gautier Chapuis to our editorial staff. At this time, only 57% of the species present are on the red list of those endangered.

“We would like to make the panthers leave, but finding a place that welcomes the wild animals is difficult,” he explained when there was no track. Now that animalists claim to have found one, in the same way as for giraffes, these words seem hollow.

Saturday November 30 at 11:15 a.m., visitors to the Tête d'Or zoo will therefore be able to meet activists from the PAZ association, who will demonstrate equipped with giraffe masksmegaphones and banners for “the closure of the Lyon zoo and the placement of animals in shelters”.
