A gold watch that was given by the captain of the ship that saved more than 700 lives when the famous Titanic sank is now being sold for a record sum.

The item, which was designed by the popular Tiffany & Co. company, is made of 18-karat gold, according to information from the Henry Aldridge & Son auction house provided to CNN on Sunday.
The unique model was given to Arthur Rostron by three women who lost their husbands when the Titanic sank after hitting an iceberg on April 15, 1912.
Rostron was traveling from the Mediterranean by boat and sailing not far from the scene of the incident. It was when he heard cries of distress that he decided to change direction. Thanks to this wise choice, the man managed to save the lives of several hundred people.
So, for this reason, the widows gave him a worthy gift to highlight his courage and bravery.
The amount of the transaction amounted to 1.5 million pounds sterling, or $2.7 million Canadian.
The previous record for this collector’s item was $2 million, a purchase which was made earlier this year.
The watch was purchased by a private collector residing in the United States and the transaction amount includes transaction fees and taxes.
