Lhe Ukrainian energy operator, DTEK, announced “emergency power cuts” on Sunday in the kyiv region and two regions in the east of the country, as national authorities earlier denounced a “massive” Russian attack on the country’s energy network.
“Emergency power cuts in kyiv, kyiv region, Donetsk region, Dnipropetrovsk region,” DTEK wrote on Telegram.
Earlier, Energy Minister German Galushchenko announced that a “massive” Russian attack on the power system was underway.
Russian forces are “attacking electricity generation and transmission facilities throughout Ukraine,” he said.
Explosions were heard in the early morning by AFP journalists in kyiv and near Sloviansk, in the Donetsk region.
Russia, by increasing its drone and missile attacks, has destroyed half of Ukraine’s energy capacity, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.
kyiv is urging its Western partners to help rebuild its electricity grid, a project that requires significant investment, and to provide it with more air defense equipment to counter Russian bombing.
Ukraine is facing major power cuts, raising fears of a harsh winter.
