Jerusalem: Demonstration Demands Elections and Return of Hostages

A major demonstration was held this Saturday evening at Square in Jerusalem, organized by the “Guardians of the Common Home” movement and the committee of Jerusalem hostage families.

Among the speakers, Amit Elgart, nephew of the hostage Itzik Elgart, directly challenged the Prime Minister: “You have sacrificed the State, the army, and the hostages who die in the Hamas tunnels that you yourself financed, all for your obsession with power. The blood of our hostages will be on your hands for eternity.

Yair Moses, son of hostage Gadi Moses, appealed to leaders: “I am addressing the prime minister, ministers and cabinet members – end this long nightmare. Bring back my father and the hundred other hostages at home, some for their recovery, others for their burial. We have been living in fear for 407 days and nights. Former Shin Bet chief Ami Ayalon denounced a “Prime Minister who acts fraudulently against the declared policy of his government and against the will of the people, destroying Israeli resilience.” He called his leadership “toxic” and called for his removal through non-violent means. Reserve Major Yaya Fink, one of the protest leaders, criticized members of the government who have not completed their military service, accusing them of trying to pass “desertion laws” in the middle of war.

Eyal Gur, one of the organizers, concluded by accusing the government of “tearing the people apart again” after the October 7 disaster, by pursuing undemocratic reforms and seeking to control all aspects of Israeli society. The demonstration illustrates the growing tension between the Netanyahu government and part of the Israeli population, particularly the families of hostages who accuse the authorities of not doing enough to obtain the release of their loved ones.
