San Pedro Sula – Mexican coach Javier Aguirre was hit in the head by an object thrown by spectators during the Nations League match in Honduras. A projectile, apparently a beer can, hit the 50-year-old just after the final whistle of the first match of the quarter-finals. Honduras won the match 2-0 (0-0).

Aguirre remained unfazed despite the injury, initially approaching his Honduran counterpart before leaving the field accompanied by his staff and security, bleeding profusely. At the press conference following the match, Aguirre clarified that it was nothing serious, saying: “It’s just football.”

The North and Central American Football Confederation then issued a statement condemning the incident and the violence that occurred at the end of the match. The incident will now be referred to the Concacaf Disciplinary Committee for further review and investigation.

The Mexican Football Federation announced that it had “taken the necessary measures through official channels to urge Concacaf to act in accordance with the regulations following this evening’s events.”

With two goals from Luis Palma (in the 64th and 79th minutes), Honduras heads into the return match in a strong position. This meeting will take place in the early hours of Wednesday in Toluca, Mexico.

Aguirre is his country’s national coach for the third time since July, aiming to lead Mexico to its third World Cup appearance after 2002 and 2010. Mexico will co-host the tournament in 2026 with the United States and Canada .
