Mitch Johnson is a former professional Basketball player and coach who currently serves as the interim coach of the San Antonio Spurs in the National Basketball Association. Prior to that, he served as an assistant coach for the Spurs from 2019 to 2024 and also served as an assistant coach for the Austin Spurs from 2016 to 2019.
Johnson began his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Austin Spurs in 2016. In 2019, the San Antonio Spurs hired Johnson as an assistant coach under Gregg Popovich. On May 15, 2021, Johnson took over as interim coach in a 140–103 loss to the Phoenix Suns while Popovich attended Tim’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Duncan. On November 2, 2024, Popovich was sidelined indefinitely from his position due to health issues, which were later confirmed to be a stroke. This led to Johnson becoming the Spurs’ interim coach. He began coaching the Spurs on November 2 in a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, having been informed only two and a half hours before that Popovich would be unavailable due to illness. The Spurs emerged victorious, winning 113-103 against the Timberwolves. This marks the third time Johnson has served as the Spurs’ interim coach.
