Thrower Oussama Khennoussi and hurdler Abdelmalik Lahoulou gave Algeria two new medals, one in gold and one in bronze, this Sunday in Douala, Cameroon, on the occasion of the 3e day of the 2024 African Athletics Championships.

This is the first continental title for Khennoussi in the discus throw. After winning silver at the African Games in Accra (Ghana), held last March, CR Belouizdad member has just confirmed his good progress by climbing to the highest step of the podium in a masterfully dominated competition. .

With a throw estimated at 63.90m, the new boss of the discus throw beat the Namibian, Ryan William (63.87m) and the South African, Victor Hogan (56.78m) and at the same time signs a new national record. Apart from the coveted gold, Khennoussi also gained valuable points in his quest to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

For his part, Lahoulou took the 3rd step of the podium with a time of 49 seconds and 36 hundredths. The Algerian was beaten by the two Botswanans, Victor Ntweng (48.88) and Kemorena Tisang (49.24), respectively, first and second in this final.

Bouzebra recovers hammer throw bronze

The other good news of the day came from the women’s hammer throw. Indeed, Zouina Bouzebra recovered the silver medal following the appeal lodged by the Algerian delegation against the Central African, Xena Ngomateke.

Concerning the other Algerians, engaged in this 3rd day of the events, Bilal Tabti finished in 7th position in the 3000m steeplechase (8:41.68), while his comrade Hichem Bouchicha did not take part in the final.

As for Hadil Rezik, she will be competing in the high jump final and represents another chance for a medal.

After three days of competition, Algeria has a total of 6 medals (3 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze), pending Rezik’s performance.

As a reminder, the first two gold charms are the work of Zahra Tatar, in the hammer throw, and Larbi Bourrada, in the decathlon. For his part, Chérif Boudoumi also finished second in the decathlon, just behind his comrade.
